New York (United States), September 27, 2026 (SPS) – Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, has reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast position in support of the Sahrawi cause and the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
This came during his meeting in New York with Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, on the sidelines of the proceedings of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting provided an opportunity to review the latest developments concerning the Western Sahara issue, particularly developments in the UN-led process aimed at reaching a just and lasting political solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination, in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions.
During the meeting, the Algerian Minister reiterated Algeria’s firm and principled position in support of the just Sahrawi cause and the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He stressed that Algeria would continue to support UN efforts aimed at enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise this right, which constitutes the essence of the Sahrawi issue and the basis for any just and lasting political settlement, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter, international law and the resolutions of international legitimacy.
The meeting was attended, on the Algerian side, by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, and the delegation accompanying the Algerian Foreign Minister. On the Sahrawi side, it was attended by the Polisario Front Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), member of the National Secretariat, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar.
