Las Palmas (Canary Islands), July 23, 2026 (SPS) – The Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities (FECAM) continues to organize official receptions for Sahrawi children participating in the Holidays in Peace program, as part of its annual support for this humanitarian and solidarity initiative.
The events follow the first official reception, held on July 15 at the Federation's headquarters on the island of Tenerife.
This week, two additional official receptions were organized. The first took place on July 21 in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario on the island of Fuerteventura. The ceremony was led by the President of FECAM's Committee on Cooperation, Youth and Equality, and Mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, alongside the host municipality's Mayor, David de Vera.
The second reception was held at FECAM's central headquarters in Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria. On behalf of the Federation's President, the event was chaired by Commissioner Óscar Hernández, Mayor of Agüimes, in the presence of Isaí Blanco, President of FECAM's Committee on Cooperation, Youth and Equality.
The receptions were attended by several Federation officials and local authorities, as well as the Polisario Front Representative in the Canary Islands; the President of the Canary Association of Friendship with the Sahrawi People, members of the association, and the Canary Islands host families welcoming the Sahrawi children.
During the ceremonies, local officials and the Polisario Front representative highlighted the significance of the Holidays in Peace program as a humanitarian and cultural bridge reflecting the values of solidarity between the Sahrawi and Canary peoples. They emphasized that the initiative offers Sahrawi children the opportunity to benefit from healthcare, educational and recreational activities while escaping the harsh summer climate of the Sahrawi refugee camps.
The speakers also praised the humanitarian commitment of the Canary Islands host families, reaffirming their solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, independence.
