Las Palmas (Canary Islands), 20 July 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Community Association on the island of Gran Canaria organised a solidarity demonstration at Las Canteras Beach in the city of Las Palmas in support of Sahrawi political prisoners.
The event was attended by the Councillor for International Solidarity at the Gran Canaria Island Council, Mr Carmelo Ramírez, members of the Canarian Association of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, and a number of solidarity movement activists. Also present were members of the Polisario Front office in the Canary Islands, the provincial office of the Ministry of Sahrawi Communities and the Occupied Territories, Sahrawi children staying on the island with their host families, as well as members of the Sahrawi community from the islands of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
The demonstration featured cultural and awareness-raising activities, including the setting up of a traditional Sahrawi tent and an exhibition of photographs of Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan occupation prisons, alongside a display of traditional items and artefacts reflecting Sahrawi national culture.
The demonstration included a number of speeches and concluded with the reading of a statement on the human rights situation in the occupied territories. The statement highlighted the conditions of Sahrawi political prisoners on hunger strike, foremost among them Naâma Asfari, whose open-ended hunger strike had exceeded forty days, and called for their immediate and unconditional release.
