Berlin (Germany), 16 July 2026 (SPS) – The leadership of Germany's progressive Die Linke Party has issued a statement of solidarity with the struggle of the Sahrawi people and its inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
The party welcomed the Polisario Front's proposal submitted to the United Nations in October 2025 to reach a mutually acceptable political solution that guarantees the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara and restores peace and stability to the region.
The party called on the German government to fully and explicitly recognise the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and to work towards the organisation of a free and fair referendum.
According to the party, a referendum, as agreed under international law, remains the only way to express the will of the Sahrawi people and reach a political solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.
The party also called on the German government to strengthen its commitment to ensuring humanitarian supplies to the Sahrawi refugee camps, in order to permanently meet the population's basic needs, particularly in the areas of food, water and medical assistance.
It further urged the European Union and its member states not to turn a blind eye to the repression inflicted on the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories, but rather to take strong action towards Morocco to compel it to respect international law and work towards a just and sustainable solution.
The party renewed its rejection of the plunder and economic exploitation of the occupied territories of Western Sahara, stressing that German and European companies involved in such illegal activities are supporting the Moroccan occupation through their business activities.
It called for compliance with the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union, including the rulings declaring the EU-Morocco trade agreements unlawful.
