Mombasa (Kenya), July 13, 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Republic participated in the Second Political Conference on Strengthening the Nexus Between Peace, Security and Development in Africa, held in the Kenyan city of Mombasa on July 11–12.

The Sahrawi delegation was led by the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to the Republic of Kenya, Mr. Mohamed Limam Mohamed Ali Sidi El Bachir.

Held under the theme "From Commitment to Action: Strengthening the Peace, Security and Development Nexus," the second edition of the conference focused on translating previous commitments into concrete and actionable policies. The initiative seeks to integrate the three pillars—peace, security and development—to address regional vulnerabilities, promote economic prosperity, and prevent the recurrence and expansion of conflicts across the continent.

Hosted by the African Union in cooperation with international and regional partners, the conference brought together policymakers, financial institutions and civil society organizations to strengthen continental solidarity. This high-level diplomatic event aims to transform existing commitments into practical measures that reinforce the interconnection between security and development while supporting political transitions across Africa.

The Sahrawi delegation affirmed that the Moroccan occupying state failed to achieve three principal objectives it had sought through the event. Chief among them was its attempt to prevent the Sahrawi Republic from participating in this important African conference, with the broader aim of monopolizing future editions of the political conference and denying other African Union member states the opportunity to host the event.

In his address, Sahrawi Ambassador Mr. Mohamed Limam Mohamed Ali Sidi El Bachir clarified the Sahrawi Republic's position before participants, emphasizing that it is impossible to separate the Sahrawi state from Africa or exclude it from the continent's institutional framework.

Angola expressed its full readiness to host the third edition of the Political Conference on Strengthening the Nexus Between Peace, Security and Development in Africa in 2028. This was confirmed by the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Mr. Bankole Adeoye. The decision establishes an important precedent for rotating the organization of the conference among African Union member states, contrary to what Morocco had sought to achieve.

At the close of the conference, the Moroccan occupying state expressed its frustration and disappointment following the failure of its efforts, as all attempts to exclude the Sahrawi Republic from the proceedings ultimately proved unsuccessful.
