Vitry-sur-Seine (France), July 1, 2026 (SPS) – The City Council of Vitry-sur-Seine, France, has strongly condemned the arbitrary detention of Sahrawi human rights defender Naama Asfari, who has entered the third week of an open-ended hunger strike aimed at urging the Moroccan authorities to implement the decisions of the United Nations human rights mechanisms concerning the Gdeim Izik group.
The Vitry-sur-Seine City Council called on the Moroccan authorities to immediately release Naama Asfari, as well as all Sahrawi political prisoners who are being arbitrarily detained in Moroccan prisons.
The appeal was made in a press statement entitled "Freedom for Naama Asfari," which describes him as a peaceful activist campaigning for the recognition of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. The statement notes that he has been imprisoned for 15 years in Kenitra Prison after being abducted by the Moroccan authorities on 7 November 2010. He was subsequently sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment following a trial that, according to the statement, violated the right to a fair trial as guaranteed under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Morocco is a State Party.
