Budapest (Hungary), 22 June 2026 (SPS) - A book on the history of Western Sahara has been published in Hungary, adding to the growing body of international literature devoted to the territory's history and decolonization process.
The book "Western Sahara and Hungary" is authored by János Besenyő, a university professor and head of the Department of African Studies in Hungary. The author has written several books on the history of Western Sahara from the Spanish occupation to the fall of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc in Eastern Europe.
The author drew his valuable information on Western Sahara from the archives of communist parties in Eastern Europe after those countries opened their communist archives to researchers and those interested in historical studies up to 1990.
The publication offers Hungarian readers an opportunity to learn more about Western Sahara, its historical development, the colonial period, and the ongoing efforts aimed at resolving the conflict. Such works contribute to raising awareness among academics, researchers, and the wider public about the history and realities of the Sahrawi people.
