Managua (Nicaragua), May 29, 2026 (SPS) – Members of the Board of the National Assembly of Nicaragua held an important meeting on Thursday with a Sahrawi delegation led by Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, Member of the National Secretariat, Representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations, and Coordinator with MINURSO.

Mr. Gustavo Porras, President of the Nicaraguan National Assembly, emphasized the significance of the meeting, which took place within the framework of strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and bilateral cooperation between the two sister peoples. He noted that the meeting provided a deeper understanding of the struggle being waged by the Sahrawi people to achieve independence and restore sovereignty over its entire territory.

Mr. Porras reaffirmed that the Polisario Front is regarded as a sister and friendly movement of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), as both share a long history of common ideals and historical solidarity. He stressed that they maintain close communication with their brothers and sisters in the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

For its part, the Sahrawi delegation expressed the deep gratitude and appreciation of the Sahrawi authorities to the people of Nicaragua and its political leadership for their historic support of the legitimate struggle of the Sahrawi people for freedom and independence. The delegation also praised the strong ties between the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Republic of Nicaragua.

The meeting provided an opportunity to brief members of the National Assembly’s Board and other attendees on the latest developments concerning the Western Sahara issue, particularly those related to the United Nations-led peace process in Western Sahara, in light of the most recent United Nations Security Council resolution and the direct discussions that have taken place between the parties to the conflict.
