Caracas (Venezuela), 14 May 2026 (SPS) – Venezuela has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, calling for broader international backing for the Sahrawi cause in order to put an end to the historical injustices committed against them.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto stated in a communiqué issued on the occasion of the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the Polisario Front that his country “continues to steadfastly defend the right of the Sahrawi people to exist as a free and sovereign nation on the African continent,” noting that “this historic struggle is grounded in the principles of international law and the pursuit of a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict.”

He praised the “courage” of the Polisario Front, described as the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, in the face of continued attacks on their territory, stressing that the sovereignty of Western Sahara “remains a priority within Caracas’ policy of solidarity with peoples struggling for their independence.”

The Venezuelan foreign minister also commended the solidarity between the two peoples, which, he said, has been strengthened over the years through “political cooperation and mutual recognition of liberation paths.” He further expressed his government’s readiness to continue supporting all voices calling for an end to colonial practices that still persist in several regions of the world.
