Brussels, 24 January 2026 (SPS) — The Sahrawi Observatory for the Monitoring of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection (SONREP) condemned the continued attempts by the Moroccan occupation to impose the inclusion of Western Sahara in trade and fisheries agreements with the European Union.

The Observatory called for strict adherence to international law and respect for the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, warning against the systematic disregard of relevant European court rulings.

According to a statement by the Observatory, it indicated in letters addressed to European Union ambassadors in Brussels that the EU “is facing a real test of its credibility,” stressing that “self-determination is not a political option open to bargaining, but a firmly established legal right of peoples.”

It added that “the European Union cannot defend the right of peoples to self-determination while ignoring the fundamental rights of the Sahrawi people.”

The Observatory further stressed that all rulings issued by the Court of Justice of the European Union and the International Court of Justice confirm that Western Sahara is a distinct and separate territory from Morocco, and that any agreement covering its land or natural resources requires the consent of the Sahrawi people.
