Asturias (Spain), 11 December 2025 (SPS) – The Secretary-General of the National Union of Sahrawi Women (NUSW), Ms. Shaba Sainy, received the fourth Human Rights Award granted by the Asturian Agency for Development Cooperation, in recognition of the efforts of Sahrawi women in defending human rights and dignity.
In her remarks on the occasion, Shaba Sainy indicated that this honor represents recognition of the efforts of Sahrawi women who continue a long and difficult struggle for freedom, dignity, and human rights. She expressed her gratitude to the Asturian Agency for Development Cooperation, the jury, and the Agency for Social Affairs and Welfare for this important recognition.
The Secretary-General noted that this award is not merely an honor for the Women’s Union as an organization, but a tribute to the struggle of an entire people, and especially to the resilience of Sahrawi women.
She added that receiving the award on International Human Rights Day is an opportunity to remind the world that there is a people who are still demanding their most basic rights: the right to freedom, justice, and to live with dignity on their land. It also highlights the suffering and resilience of Sahrawi women in the refugee camps, in the occupied territories, and in the diaspora.
