Algiers, 28 November 2025 (SPS) – UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, and donor entities announced the launch of the second edition of the Sahrawi Refugee Response Plan for 2026/2027, estimating the required funding at 177 million USD.
The announcement ceremony took place at the Saint George Hotel in Algiers, in the presence of a significant number of representatives from UN humanitarian bodies and agencies, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Algeria, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Sahrawi and Algerian Red Crescent organizations.
Representatives of several humanitarian bodies presented important assessment reports on the humanitarian situation of Sahrawi refugees and the evaluation of the 2025 aid program. They called for increased humanitarian support due to the noted shortfall in assistance provided by some parties.
The representative of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) issued an urgent appeal during his speech, calling on all donors and humanitarian organizations to provide more support for next year’s Sahrawi Refugee Response Plan.
The representative of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Algeria’s positions and its support for the Sahrawi people, stressing Algeria’s continued readiness to work toward easing and alleviating the hardships of refugee life.
For his part, the President of the Sahrawi Red Crescent, Mr. Bouhbaini Yahya, expressed his gratitude to Algeria—its government and people—for its firm positions, continuous support, and unwavering solidarity with the Sahrawi people, as well as for its generous hospitality throughout 50 years of Sahrawi refuge. He reaffirmed that these values reflect “the Algeria of loyalty and commitment.”
He emphasized that the shortest way to end the suffering of Sahrawi refugees and their life in exile is to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable and legitimate right to self-determination and independence, in accordance with UN and UN Security Council resolutions. He also expressed deep thanks to all organizations and donor bodies contributing to humanitarian assistance for the Sahrawi people.
He concluded by recalling the resilience of the Sahrawi people and their determination to overcome all challenges in order to achieve their rights to freedom, dignity, and the building of their independent state.
