Shaheed El Hafed, 16 November 2025 (SPS) – The Special Adviser to the President of the Republic responsible for natural resources and related legal issues, Mr. Oubi Bushraya Bashir, affirmed that the referendum is the option that guarantees the Sahrawi people their right to self-determination.
In an interview with BBC, Oubi Bushraya stated that “the referendum remains the valid and standing option, in line with the latest UN Security Council resolution, which affirms the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination in accordance with the Charter and principles of the United Nations.” He added that this means “the Sahrawi people alone have the right to determine the final status of the territory, as it is undergoing a decolonization process.”
Responding to the remarks made by Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who claimed that “the referendum has been buried and surpassed,” the Sahrawi official stressed that “what has truly become obsolete and buried long ago is the Moroccan proposal.”
