Dili (East Timor), May 27, 2025 (SPS) – In an interview with East Timor's English-language radio and television (RTTL), Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat and Polisario Front’s representative at the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, emphasized that the struggle of the East Timorese people serves as a great source of inspiration for the Sahrawi people and for all nations still fighting for their freedom and independence.

The Sahrawi diplomat highlighted the striking similarities between the struggles of the East Timorese and Sahrawi peoples, noting that both began in 1975 when the two nations fell victim to their neighbors and were forced into resistance. He pointed out that both peoples recognized the need for a joint struggle, including on the diplomatic front, where their liberation movements worked together in international and regional forums.

He added that the special relationship between the two peoples is not merely historical but continues to grow stronger every day. A key milestone in this relationship was the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Sahrawi Republic and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste after its independence, with the Sahrawi embassy in Dili being the only one of its kind in the region.

The Polisario Front’s UN representative expressed hope that the Sahrawi people would soon be able to celebrate their own independence alongside their brothers and sisters in East Timor and other allied nations, marking yet another successful decolonization process, just as in the case of East Timor.
