Algiers, April 10, 2025 (SPS) – Algerian political parties have strongly condemned the U.S. State Department’s position on the Western Sahara issue, which considers the so-called "autonomy plan" a solution to the conflict.
In this context, the Rally for Hope of Algeria party expressed its profound astonishment and rejection of the recent U.S. stance, describing it as a blatant contradiction of UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions and a clear violation of international legitimacy.
The party emphasized that this position undermines all UN efforts aimed at achieving a just and final solution based on the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence. It further condemned the decision as a "shameless bias in favor of Moroccan occupation," arguing that recognizing this stance amounts to an attempt to legitimize occupation.
The Rally for Hope of Algeria called on international actors, particularly the United Nations and the African Union, to uphold the option of independence and enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their legitimate right to freedom and self-determination without external dictates or imposed solutions.
National Democratic Rally (RND) Condemns U.S. Position
For its part, the National Democratic Rally (RND) denounced and condemned the U.S. administration’s latest announcement, describing it as a biased decision that violates international legitimacy and UN resolutions, which classify Western Sahara as a decolonization issue under the Fourth Committee.
The RND considered the U.S. stance a "reward for the Moroccan Makhzen regime" in exchange for its normalization with the Zionist entity and its continued support for the Israeli government’s aggression against the defenseless Palestinian people.
The party reaffirmed its support for Algeria’s steadfast position, which adheres to international legitimacy and backs UN efforts to organize a self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people.
Future Front: U.S. Decision a Mockery of International Law
The Future Front described the U.S. decision as a "flagrant disregard for international legitimacy and a gross violation of the historical and humanitarian right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination."
The party’s statement stressed that "the right to self-determination is not a favor granted by anyone, but a fundamental principle enshrined by the UN, rooted in the sacrifices and struggles of free peoples against colonialism and domination." It added that this right "cannot be bypassed through political maneuvers or diplomatic pressures based on temporary interests."
The party emphasized that "the Western Sahara issue remains an unfinished decolonization process, with its people still deprived of their natural right to freely choose their political future." It warned that "any attempt to impose solutions outside the framework of international legitimacy distorts the path of justice and deviates from the founding principles of the international system."
The Future Front praised the struggles of freedom-seeking peoples, reiterating its unwavering solidarity with the Sahrawi people in their legitimate struggle. It called on the international community to "uphold its moral and legal obligations toward just causes and return to the UN process as the sole legitimate framework for resolving this conflict, free from biased interference and dubious diplomacy."
