Algiers, April 6, 2025 (SPS) – Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received on Sunday evening the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who is on a working visit to Algeria.

De Mistura’s visit comes as part of his regional tour in preparation for the briefing he will deliver to the Security Council on April 14.

During the meeting, Algerian Minister Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to revive the political settlement process for the Western Sahara conflict, based on the UN Charter and the principles of international legitimacy regarding decolonization.

The Algerian Foreign Minister also expressed Algeria’s firm conviction that the only way to complete the decolonization process in Western Sahara lies in resuming direct negotiations between the two parties to the conflict—without preconditions and in good faith.

This is aimed at reaching a political solution that ensures the Sahrawi people’s inalienable and imprescriptible right to self-determination, in accordance with all relevant UN resolutions.
