Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain), December 31, 2024 (SPS) - The International Association of Lawyers for Western Sahara expressed deep concern over the attacks and smear campaign directed against Aziz Ghali, president of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights and first vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).
These actions follow statements by the leader of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, in which he expressed his steadfast support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, a position that the Association has defended in line with United Nations resolutions and international legitimacy.
The Association affirmed in its statement that the harassment campaign against Aziz Ghali aims not only to silence his voice but also to obstruct the work of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, especially at this sensitive time as the Association prepares to hold its 14th Congress. It noted that this pattern of harassment demonstrates an attempt by Moroccan authorities to restrict freedom of opinion and expression and the normal functioning of human rights organizations in the country.
In this context, the International Association of Lawyers for Western Sahara condemned the ongoing human rights violations committed in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, which include the mistreatment of Sahrawi activists, as well as the prevention of international observers from entering the occupied territories to document the human rights situation.
