Occupied El-Aaiun, December 25, 2024 (SPS) - Saharawi civilian prisoner Abdullah Walid Ahmed Lakhefawni, a member of the Gdeim Izik group, is going on a warning hunger strike for 48 hours on Thursday and Friday, at the central prison in Kenitra, north of Rabat, Morocco.
This action comes in response to his denial of access to justice, according to information received by the Saharawi Prisoners’ Protection Association.
The motivations behind Abdullah Walid Ahmed Lakhefawni’s hunger strike are related to demanding that the Moroccan state comply with the provisions of a decision by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which mandates the immediate and unconditional release of the Saharawi civilian prisoners from the Gdeim Izik group and compensation for the harm they have suffered during their years of arbitrary detention.
The administration of the central prison in Kenitra has deliberately prevented Abdullah Walid Ahmed Lakhefawni from sending a reminder letter to the Moroccan Minister of Justice, without providing any justification for this denial. This is considered a violation of his legitimate right to access justice and a failure to comply with international obligations that take precedence over local laws and constitutions.
