Algiers, December 7, 2024 (SPS) - The President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and his South African counterpart, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, reaffirmed their agreement on several regional and international issues.
In a joint press statement following their discussions at the Algerian presidency during the state visit, the Algerian President stated: "We had an in-depth conversation about the current regional and international situation, especially the Zionist aggression against Gaza and Lebanon. I would like to take this opportunity to once again commend the call made by the Republic of South Africa to the International Court of Justice, and we fully support it."
He added: "In our discussion regarding the situations in the region, we addressed the issue of Western Sahara, where we reaffirmed the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and the enabling of their legitimate rights as stipulated by international legitimacy."
The Algerian President noted that he exchanged views with his brother, the President of the sister Republic of South Africa, on the conditions in the Sahel region, Libya, Sudan, and the Central and Southern African regions, along with other topics related to the work of the African Union. They concluded that there is a consensus of views between their countries and an agreement on preferring political and negotiated solutions to resolve crises away from external interventions.
He also confirmed that they agreed to intensify efforts at the level of the United Nations and the African Union to "enhance the role of our continent and work towards achieving the African demand for reforming the Security Council system to rectify the historical injustice towards Africa in accordance with the Sirte Agreement."
