Boudjedour (refugee camps), 6 December 2024 (SPS) - Participants in the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Sahrawi National Union of Women (NUSW) called, on Thursday at the Boudjedour Sahrawi refugee camp, for the consolidation of national unity among Sahrawi women and their commitment to continue the struggle for liberation and nation-building.
During these festivities, attended by the Sahrawi president and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, members of the Sahrawi government, and female delegations from Spain, Brazil, Germany, Portugal, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mauritania, and Algeria (represented by the Algerian National Union of Women), the participants reiterated their support for the Sahrawi women's struggle and, through them, for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence.
In a statement to APS, the Secretary-General of the NUSW, Shaba Saini, indicated that the Sahrawi National Union of Women has succeeded, through a successful popular diplomacy, in obtaining representation within international organizations, including the African Women’s Union and the Global Women’s March, as well as a membership position within the Democratic Socialist Women’s Union and other alliances.
The goal of the NUSW remains to advocate for the just Sahrawi cause and for Sahrawi women who continue to engage in the struggle for liberation and nation-building alongside their compatriots, she added.
For Ms. Shaba Saini, the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the NUSW represents a milestone in the resistance of Sahrawi women, and the participation of supportive women from various regions of the world allows for an exchange of experiences with Sahrawi women.
These festivities, she continued, send a new message to women worldwide, reminding them that there are militant, fighting, and resistant women under occupation in the territories occupied by Morocco, alongside other Sahrawi women in the camps of pride and dignity in their fight for the establishment of Sahrawi state structures and the Polisario Front.
For her part, the Secretary-General of the Algerian National Union of Women (ANUW), Nouria Hafsi, stated to APS that the 50th anniversary of the Sahrawi Women’s Union serves as a moment to review its achievements and an occasion to look to the future with more determination and commitment to the liberation of their country.
