Geneva (Switzerland), September 13, 2024 (SPS) - A group of countries from various continents has called on the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to send a mission to monitor and investigate the dire human rights situation in Western Sahara, based on the primary mandate of the UN Human Rights Council to strengthen and promote human rights, respect public freedoms, and address human rights violations worldwide without discrimination.
The group of countries expressed, through a statement delivered by the Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste, Ambassador Maria de Lourdes Martins de Sousa Bissa, at the 57th session of the Human Rights Council, their regret over the continued delay in sending technical missions to monitor human rights in Western Sahara. They called on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to send a technical mission to monitor and assess the human rights situation in Western Sahara and report back to the Council.
It is noteworthy that the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which commenced its work on Monday, August 9th, and is scheduled to conclude on October 12th, is witnessing numerous activities and interventions advocating for the just Sahrawi cause.
