Ljubljana (Slovenia), 31 August 2024 (SPS) – The Republic of Slovenia issued a communiqué in which Slovenia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Tanja Fajon, reaffirmed her country's support for the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination, in line with international legality as determined by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council resolutions.

This statement comes as a response to false claims propagated by Morocco over the past three months, alleging that Slovenia had changed its stance on the conflict to support Morocco's so-called sovereignty over Western Sahara and its plan for autonomy.

According to Morocco, the Slovenian Foreign Minister who visited Rabat at that time had announced this shift, which has been proven to be a baseless allegation exposed by this new communiqué from the European country.

The Republic of Slovenia issued this joint communiqué following a meeting between Mrs. Tanja Fajon and her Algerian counterpart, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. Both parties reaffirmed their consistent stance in supporting the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and their commitment to international legality in this regard.

It appears that Morocco's attempts to promote alleged international support for its illegal occupation of Western Sahara have failed, as the facts continue to reveal Morocco's unfounded claims of international backing for its colonial adventure in Western Sahara.

This statement also reflects Slovenia's consistent and clear foreign policy, reaffirming its historical position in supporting the right of peoples to self-determination—a stance derived from its history and core principles upheld for decades. (SPS)
