Algiers, 2 August 2024 (SPS) - The People’s National Assembly (Parliament’s lower house) condemned on Wednesday in a statement the French Government’s support for the Moroccan colonial plan as part of the so-called Moroccan sovereignty over the territory of Western Sahara, expressing its support for the Algerian State’s decisions in this regard.

The lower house “roundly condemned the shameful decision of the French Government in favor of the Moroccan colonial autonomy plan as part of the so-called Moroccan sovereignty over the territory of Western Sahara in disregard of all United Nations resolutions concerning the just Sahrawi cause, registered as a decolonization issue.”

Faced with the flagrant complicity between colonizers of yesterday and today, the lower house “roundly condemns this reckless and ill-considered decision that goes against UN efforts to resolve this conflict as part of international legality and denies the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.”

“Through this serious and risky drift, the French Government tramples on all laws and rules, shirks its responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council and legitimizes the occupation of a founding member state of the African Union,” the lower house noted.

“As representatives of the people, we condemn this inconsistent decision of the French Government which, disregarding all laws and rules, supports the expansionist colonial regime of the Makhzen while it is supposed to assume its responsibility as a permanent member of the Security Council and work towards a lasting solution that upholds the legitimate right of the Sahrawi people.”

In this regard, the lower house called on “the French Parliament and all freedom-loving individuals in France to condemn this shameful stance, which reminds us of the infamous and dishonorable colonial past.”

The lower house of Parliament also applauded “Algeria’s unwavering support for just causes worldwide and the Algerian diplomacy faithful to humanitarian principles and values of security and peace, in the New Algeria under the leadership of Abdelmadjid Tebboune.”

The lower house expressed its “full support for the Algerian State’s decisions in this regard,” affirming that “they mirror the conscience of the Algerian people, who stand against injustice, aggression and the confiscation of peoples’ right to freedom and a dignified life.”
