Madrid, May 27, 2024 (SPS) - The Spanish Popular Party (Partido Popular) has managed to obtain the support of all the political forces represented within the legislative body, with the exception of the members of the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), in order to isolate the unilateral and illegal position of the Spanish Prime Minister regarding the conflict in Western Sahara.
The parliamentary session once again called on the Prime Minister to abandon his unilateral position on Western Sahara and withdraw his support for the Moroccan proposal regarding the last colony on the African continent.
The recommendation, supported by the Sumar party, which is part of the governing coalitions, emphasizes the parliament's commitment to a coherent foreign policy that respects the historical position of the Spanish state.
The initiative of the Spanish Popular Party comes in the wake of a questioning of the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, during which the position of the Spanish government was strongly criticized.
The recommendation was voted on point by point, and despite the negative vote of the Socialist Party, the deputies of the Popular Party managed to obtain a majority in the Chamber, including the political forces participating in the government coalition, in order to urge the Prime Minister to restore Spain's positive neutrality regarding the conflict in Western Sahara.
The aforementioned recommendation includes a rejection of the position expressed by the Prime Minister in March 2022, in support of the Moroccan expansionist stance.
