Russia supports  solution consistent with international legality in Western Sahara

Moscow (Russia), 25 May 2024 (SPS) - As part of the consultations between the United Nations and influential powers in the UN Security Council on the Sahrawi issue, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, Alexander Ivanko, held Friday two separate meetings today at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

 The first with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, in charge of international organizations, Mr. Sergey Vershinin, and the second with the Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and African Affairs, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Mr. Mikhail Bogdanov.  

According to the statements issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry, "the discussions focused on the daily activities of the UN mission and the situation in the region," and the views converged on "emphasizing the importance of reaching a fair and acceptable solution to the conflict based on recognized law, including relevant UN Security Council resolutions."

At the same time, Russia reaffirmed its ongoing support for the activities carried out by the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara in terms of creating favorable conditions on the ground to make constructive progress in the UN-sponsored Western Sahara settlement process.
