Algiers, April 26, 2024 (SPS) - Algeria and Canada have expressed convergence of views on various regional and international issues, particularly the Sahrawi and Palestinian causes, reaffirming their support for international efforts in these issues.

A statement by the Algerian Council of the Nation (Upper House of Parliament) indicated that the Speaker of the Council, Salah Goudjil, received Thursday, in Algiers, the speaker of Canada's House of Commons, Greg Fergus, who is on a visit to Algeria, where they discussed a range of issues of mutual interest.

In this context, the statement adds, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation "recalled the suffering of the Sahrawi people from colonial oppression and grave violations of human rights, as well as the looting of the resources of their usurped land," emphasizing that "their just cause is clear and presented to the United Nations Committee on Decolonization, enjoying growing international support. However, it lacks the strict enforcement of international legitimacy and the imposition of respect for the Sahrawi people's right to sovereignty and self-determination through the organization of a free referendum in Western Sahara."

For his part, the Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons expressed his concern about the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirmed his country's support for the two-state solution initiative, which, according to him, would lead to achieving security, peace, and dignity. He also affirmed his country's supportive position towards international efforts to reach a "peaceful negotiated solution to the Western Sahara issue through the United Nations."
