Trail of Gdeim Izik political detainees postpones for indefinite date

Submitted on

Rabat, Jan 14, 2012 (SPS) - The military Justice in Rabat military Court has postponed the trail of 23 Saharawi political prisoners, arbitrarily arrested on the ground of Gdeim Izik camp, for an indefinite date, without being brought to the court scheduled for Friday Jan 13, 2012, according to a human rights source.

The sudden delay is the first of its kind, which came at least two days before the date set for the trial, the defense body has been informed about the delay without giving the reasons for the postponement and the date set for next trial.

According to a communiqué of the Collective of the Saharawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA), this military trail is “an exceptional judgment” because it prejudices the terms of a fair trial, given that all detainees are civilians, including members of the dialogue committee delegate for Sahrawis exodus in Gdeim Izik camp as well as Saharawi defenders of human rights.

Many international observers and human rights defenders, press foundations and representatives of some embassies in Morocco have attended in the official time set for the trial on January 13, 2012.

It should be recalled that since their incarceration, Gdeim Izik detainnes had observed four hunger strikes to alert public opinion and demand improvements in their conditions of detention and the holding of a fair trial before a civil court or being unconditional released. (SPS)
