AU to Morocco: End the occupation of Western Sahara and stop persecuting Sahrawi people

Addis Ababa, June 04,2013 (SPS)- The  AU Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has called on Morocco to End the occupation of Western Sahara and stop persecuting Sahrawi people, in an interview with The Pan African News Agency (PANA) published today

 

“The AU has a clear position on it: Morocco to end the occupation of the Sahrawi territory and the persecution of the people of Sahrawi” Dr. Dlamini Zuma said

 

She reconfirmed that “The lasting solution to the disputed sovereignty of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) is to provide the people of Western Sahara the right to self-determination, as envisaged by the UN Declaration on Human Rights and the Constitutive Act of the African Union (AU)”

 

The  AU Commission Chairperson  added “Our approach to the situation in relation to the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic has been consistent”, expressing optimism that the AU heads of state and government would find a solution to the issue as soon as possible.

 

 

She also stated that “With this in mind, we have long accepted the SADR as a full member of the Union, and we have called for the immediate organisation of the referendum in Western Sahara, so that we can resolutely tackle the root causes of conflict there”

 

“We have also noted, with shock, the Report of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights presented to us during the 21st Assembly of our Union, and request that Morocco desist persecuting the people of Saharawi,” Dr Dlamini Zuma said.(SPS)
