Submitted on

Algiers, June 17, 2013 (SPS) - Algeria hailed Monday the quality of debates at the United Nations on the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, especially regarding Western Sahara.

“We hail the quality of debates, held recently in New York during a session of the committee in charge of assessing the implementation of the Convention on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples,” said the Spokesperson of Algerian Foreign Ministry Mr. Amar Belani.

He said that many of the speakers underlined the “need to step up efforts for the decolonization of Western Sahara by enabling the Saharawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination, through a credible referendum organized under the aegis of the United Nations.”

While other speakers “denounced the human rights violations in the occupied Sahrawi territories,” Belani said. (SPS)
