Norway must act to prevent EP from approving fishing pact with Morocco, says FO

Submitted on

Oslo, Nov 19, 2013 (SPS) - The Norwegian Union of Social Educators and Social Workers (FO) urged its country to move towards its allies in Europe in order to prevent the European Parliament (EP) from ratifying the fisheries pact with Morocco, because it includes the territorial waters of Western Sahara.

In a motion unanimously approved Sunday at the closing session of its congress, FO requested its country to prevent the European Parliament from approving the fesheries agreement with Morocco, because the latter constitutes a flagrant violation to international law and legitimacy acy as long as it does not excludes the territorial waters of Western Sahara, a non-self-governing territory occupied by Morocco since 1975.

FO asked Norway’s government;

-To act in favour of expanding the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to include the monitoring and protection of human rights in this territory.

-To move towards France to stop her from blocking the efforts for an impartial international monitoring of human rights in the Western Sahara.

-To confirm to Morocco that any solution to the conflict must be based on the respect for the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence.

-To redouble Norway’s assistance for Saharawi refugees in Algeria.

-To continue to work in the framework of the position adopted since 2002, which recommends owners of the capital and companies of Norway not to invest in the Western Sahara until the conflict is resolved.

It is note worthy that the Norwegian Union of Social Educators and Social Workers (FO) is a trade association comprised of more than 26,500 child-care educators, social workers, policy makers, welfare workers and students. (SPS)
