Submitted on

Stockholm, February 16, 2015 (SPS) – Swedish foreign minister, Margot Wallstrom, has reaffirmed that Sweden is opposed to the exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources by Morocco.

Ms Wallstrom who was speaking in the Swedish Parliament, said that the position of his country is "consistent with international law and based on the opinion issued in January 2012, the UN adviser, Hans Corell, of Swedish nationality, who had indicated that the exploitation of natural resources in Western Sahara must be in favor of the Saharawi people and in line with their interests and wishes. "

The head of the Swedish diplomacy who made this statement in a response to a question from a member of the Left Party, said "this foundation has motivated the vote of Sweden against the Partnership Agreement in the fishing sector between the EU and Morocco in 2006 and 2013.

She considered that "Morocco had not fulfilled its obligations under international law that require it to take into account the will of the Sahrawi people." (SPS)
