Brussels (Belgium), February 04,2016 (SPS) - Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) called out, Wednesday, the European Commission on the humanitarian situation of Sahrawi refugees in Tindouf camps, urging the executive of the Union to “urgently” increase its aid to meet the basic needs of these refugees.
The MEPs launched an urgent call to the European Union (EU) to grant emergency funds to Sahrawi refugees in Tindouf camps in order to respond to the flooding crisis that hit these camps in October 2015.
“The European Union must be at the forefront regarding the response to be provided to this emergency situation by mobilizing funds from the European Union budget and that of its State members, in view of its historic and current responsibility to the European neighborhood,” argued the MEPs in their call addressed to the European Commission.
The heavy rains and floods of October 2015 caused large-scale damages in the camps welcoming the Sahrawi refugees in the dry region of Tindouf in South Western Algeria, recalled the MEPs, adding that the latest flooding devastated the camps of Dakhla and destroyed about 18,000 other houses.
