New York (United Nations), 15 October 2022 (SPS) - The Polisario Front representative to the UN and coordinator with the MINURSO, Sidi Mohamed Omar, welcomed the adoption Friday by the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, in charge of decolonization issues, of a resolution reaffirming the legal framework of the conflict in Western Sahara as a decolonization issue, considering it as a "strong setback for the Moroccan occupation regime and its attempts to change the legal nature of the Sahrawi cause.
Sid Mohamed Omar stressed, in press statement in New York, that this resolution "reaffirms the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence in accordance with the principles contained in the Charter of the United Nations and General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV).
The reaffirmation by the UN Fourth Committee on Special Political and Decolonization Issues of the legal framework of the Western Sahara issue as a decolonization issue and the responsibility of the United Nations towards the Sahrawi people "is a strong setback for the Moroccan occupation regime and its attempts to change the legal nature of the Sahrawi cause," added the Sahrawi diplomat.
The resolution, he said, "reinforces the consistent position of the international organization (UN) on the issue of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue included since 1963 on the agenda of the Fourth Committee of the General Assembly and the Special Committee on the status of implementation of the Declaration granting independence to colonized countries and peoples.
The Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, responsible for decolonization issues, adopted on Friday a resolution, without a vote, reaffirming the inalienable right of all peoples to self-determination and independence in accordance with the principles set forth in the Charter of the United Nations and in General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) of 14 December 1960 containing the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonized Countries and Peoples.
The resolution also reaffirmed "the responsibility of the United Nations towards the people of Western Sahara" and requested the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonized Countries and Peoples to "continue to examine the situation in Western Sahara as a Territory subject to decolonization and to report thereon to the General Assembly at its 78th session. It also requested the Secretary General to submit to the General Assembly at its next session a report on the implementation of this resolution.
