Mexico affirms that a referendum for self-determination is a just solution that respects the will of the Sahrawi people

New York, October 4, 2022 (SPS) – The permanent representative of Mexico to UN Mr. Juan Ramón de la Fuente, affirmed in his country's intervention yesterday before the Fourth UN Decolonization Committee, that Mexico supports organizing a referendum for self-determination to the conflict in Western Sahara in accordance with international law, as a “just solution” that respects the will of the Saharawi people.

Mexico reiterated that it is a historical paradox, 60 years after the great wave of liberation of the colonial countries, which allowed nearly 150 countries to be free and independent, this task is still not completed yet with the presence of peoples still languishing under the brunt of colonialism as the Sahrawi people.

It also indicated, through the intervention of its representative in the Fourth Committee that the UN Resolution 1415, which guarantees freedom and independence for colonial countries and peoples, must be respected, which considers international law on the principle of self-determination of peoples and nullifies any repressive measures that affect the sovereignty of peoples on their territories.
