Representative of Polisario Front meets with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations

New York (United Nations), 3 October 2022 (SPS) - Member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front, Representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, held a meeting with Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of the United Nations Secretariat and discussed issues related to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), pending the consultations to be held by the Security Council in the mid of this month on the extension of the mandate of the mission, which expires on October 31, 2022.

The representative of the Polisarion Front briefed the UN official about the position of the Polisario Front on these and other related issues in light of the collapse of the 1991 ceasefire following the Moroccan occupation state carried out its aggressive action on the liberated Sahrawi territories on November 13, 2020, which led to the resumption of the legitimate armed struggle of the Sahrawi people.

During the last visit of the UN Secretary General's personal envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, the Polisario Front  affirmed that the Sahrawi side remains strongly committed to its right to resort to all legitimate means, including the armed struggle, to defend the sacred and non-negotiable rights of the Sahrawi people to freedom and independence, while leaving the path of peaceful settlement open, provided that the Sahrawi people can exercise its inalienable right to self-determination and independence in accordance with the principles of international legality and the relevant resolutions of the UN and the African Union (AU).
