New York (United Nations) 22 september 2022 (SPS)- he President of the Republic of Peru, Pedro Castillo, advocated the inalienable right to self-determination of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic at the United Nations General Assembly, in his speech on Tuesday.
"Peru has re-established diplomatic relations with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic and strongly supports its right to self-determination. We give our fullest support to the actions to be taken by the representative of the Secretary General to re-establish the ceasefire in Western Sahara and to provide a negotiated and peaceful solution” he said.
The Peruvian President added that “the construction of peace also implies fulfilling the mandate to resolve the still pending situation of colonial peoples and territories. Peru fought for its independence at the beginning of the 20th century on the basis of the principle of self-determination of peoples. That is why its diplomacy since 1947 has firmly supported and continues to support the access to independence and self-determination of the territories and peoples that are under UN mandate to gain their independence" he said.
