6th anniversary of passing of Martyr President Mohamed Abdelaziz

Shahid Al Hafid, 30 May 2022 (SPS) - The Sahrawi people commemorate Tuesday, May 31, the sixth anniversary of the death of the pioneer of the political struggle and icon of the defense of the rights of the Sahrawi people, the late Mohamed Abdelaziz, historical leader of the Polisario Front, who left behind him a rich history of struggle and became a reference for future generations.

Today, the free peoples of the world remember the late president as one of the symbols of peace and one of those who used the word as a weapon to serve freedom and democracy, so that his country and his people regain their legitimate rights to self-determination and independence.

This commemoration comes at a time when the Sahrawi people have resumed the armed struggle following the Moroccan military aggression of November 13, 2020, against Sahrawi civilians who were peacefully protesting against the plunder of their natural resources.

The late Abdelaziz was one of the founders of the Polisario Front, before being elected to its political bureau at its founding congress on May 10, 1973.

Following the death of Martyr El-Ouali Moustapha Sayed (one of the main founders and leaders of the Polisario Front), Mohamed Abdelaziz was elected Secretary General of the Polisario Front, President of the Revolutionary Command Council and President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in August 1976.

His long and rich career as a fighter for independence and the defense of just causes was marked by the accession, in 1984, of the SADR to the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU).

The deceased passed away on May 31, 2016, at the age of 68, following a long illness.
