Malabo, 28 May 2022 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, stressed the need to redouble efforts to find the best and most effective ways and policies to address the situation of refugees and displaced persons in Africa, highlighting the great importance of this issue and its impact on security and stability in the continent.
"Our organization's concern for the situation of refugees and displaced persons is of paramount importance, as the subject has an impact on the overall social and economic situation of our continent, particularly on security and stability, and the consequences it has for the development and prosperity of our peoples, and for the future of our future generations, which necessitates us to think about creating suitable alternatives to grow in the best conditions, away from the scourge of wars, poverty and conflicts from which our continent has suffered for a long time," underlined President Ghali in his speech before the heads of state and government of the African Union during the work of the Extraordinary Summit on Humanitarian Assistance, on Friday, in Malabo (Equatorial Guinea).
"One of the main causes of the current dangerous and regrettable humanitarian situation is the lack of respect for our charters and resolutions, such as respect for the borders inherited in the wake of independence, those relating to democracy and good governance, the Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights, or specific conventions, such as the fight against terrorism or desertification, etc.," he said.
An extraordinary summit on humanitarian crises in Africa opened Friday in Malabo, with interventions by Senegalese President, current African Union President Macky Sall, President of the Equatorial Republic of Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, African Union Commission President Moussa Faki, as well as the UN Secretary-General's representative in charge of humanitarian issues.
The extraordinary summit aims to discuss the challenges affecting humanitarian assistance in Africa, to advocate sustainable funding for humanitarian needs on the continent, as well as to mobilize resources for humanitarian response in Africa.
