EU reiterates its "full support" for UN-led process in Western Sahara

Brussels, 7 May 2022 (SPS) - The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, reaffirmed the EU's "full support" for the UN-led process to find "a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the conflict in Western Sahara", occupied by Morocco.
In a response to the letter sent to him on 23 March 2022 by 19 MEPs on the issue of Western Sahara, Mr Borrell reiterated that "the European Union continues to fully support the efforts of the United Nations to find a peaceful settlement to this conflict, according to the parameters most recently expressed in the UN Security Council, including resolution 2602 (2021)".
To this end, he recalled "having publicly and repeatedly encouraged the resumption of discussions (between the Polisario Front and Morocco) under the leadership of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General, Staffan De Mistura, who enjoys the full support of the European Union in the search for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.
"At this time of heightened global tensions, I believe it is crucial to redouble our efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to this protracted conflict," he said.
"The European Union will continue to encourage the parties to engage in the UN-led political process in a serious and respectful manner," he added.
In conclusion, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell Fontelles, expressed his "unequivocal commitment to cooperate with the UN to find a peaceful solution to the Western Sahara issue.
