Submitted on

New York (United Nations), 21, April 2022 (SPS) – The POLISARIO Representative at the UN and Coordinator with MINURSO, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, met Tuesday with the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary for the Western Sahara, Staffan de De Mistura.
Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar informed Mr. De Mistura about the position of the POLISARIO on the UN peace process in Western Sahara and other issues related to the conflict.
The UN Security Council will hold a consultation session on Wednesday on the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), in accordance with paragraph 10 of Resolution 2602 (2021) adopted by the Security Council on October 29, 2021, in which it requested the Secretary-General to provide information to the Council at regular intervals, including within six months of the Mission's mandate renewal date.
In this session, the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Western Sahara is expected to provide information on the results of his visit to the region last January, while the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara and Head of MINURSO will present information in relation to the progress on the ground observed by his Mission, in light of the current situation of war resumed since the Moroccan occupation State violated the ceasefire in force since 1991, with its aggression that occurred last November 13, 2020.
It should be recalled that POLISARIO had recently emphasized that "the only way to advance in the search for a peaceful, fair and lasting solution to the question of decolonization in Western Sahara is to allow the Saharawi people to exercise their inalienable and non-negotiable right to self-determination and independence in a free and democratic manner, in accordance with the principles of international legality and the relevant United Nations resolutions of the United Nations and the African Union”.
