Spain's change of position on Western Sahara is a "grave" decision

Submitted on

Madrid, 4 April 2022 (SPS) - The President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, described Monday the change of position of the Spanish government on the conflict in Western Sahara as a "grave" decision, which contradicts its position until then in favor of "a solution based on UN resolutions.
"It is obvious that this is a radical shift that is not expected from a country that is the de jure administering power of Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony," said Brahim Ghali in an interview with Spanish daily El Mundo.
"I feel like any Sahrawi facing this grave decision. Spain abandoned us to our fate in 1975 and 47 years later, they are doing the same thing", added Mr. Ghali.
He continued: "Spain has always defended a solution within the framework of the UN, based on the resolutions" of the United Nations, "which means defending the self-determination of the Sahrawi people to complete its decolonization process. That's why we don't understand this radical move of the Spanish government".
It should be recalled that the new position of the Spanish government supporting the Moroccan plan of the so-called "autonomy" in Western Sahara has been widely criticized by the Spanish political class, calling it "unilateral" and "provocative".
