Shahid Al Hafed (Sahrawi Refugee camps), 17 January 2022 (SPS) - The representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and Coordinator with the MINURSO, Sidi Mohamed Omar highlighted Sunday the commitment of the Sahrawi people to its inalienable rights and to tirelessly defend its right to freedom and independence.
In a statement to the press after official talks between the Sahrawi President, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali and the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General to Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, Mr. Sidi Mohamed Omar stressed the commitment of the Sahrawis to their inalienable rights and to tirelessly defend their right to freedom and independence.
The Sahrawi official also stressed "the strong will of the Sahrawis to work for the establishment of peace and stability in the region", and their support for any peaceful process allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise its right to self-determination and independence.
The Italian-Swedish diplomat, Staffan de Mistura, had the opportunity to inquire about the reality experienced by the Sahrawi people and to listen to citizens of different ages who reaffirmed to him, according to Mr. Sidi Mohammed Omar, that "their demand remains total national independence, and this is the position of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and the Polisario Front".
The visit of Staffan de Mistura in the Sahrawi refugee camps, which began Saturday and lasted two days, allowed the UN envoy to visit health, educational and social structures of the Sahrawi state and to meet with regional authorities during his first stop in Smara and Boujedour.
De Mistura also met with SADR and Polisario Front officials.
The UN envoy will continue his first tour of the region, which will end on January 19, by visiting Algeria and Mauritania, as neighboring countries and observers, according to the joint settlement plan between the UN and the Organization of African Unity (currently the African Union) and related decisions of the Security Council.
