New York, Dec 18 2021 (SPS) - The continuation of the colonization of parts of Western Sahara by Morocco constitutes a violation of the United Nations’ resolutions on decolonization, affirmed the Polisario Front, calling on the UN to take the necessary measures to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.
In a statement published on Tuesday, on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Peoples and Countries (resolution 1514 of the General Assembly), the representative of the Polisario Front to UN affirmed that “the continuation of the colonization of parts of Western Sahara by Morocco constitutes a violation of UN’s resolutions and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on 16 October 1975 and comprising that “the there are no territorial sovereignty ties between the territory of Western Sahara and the Moroccan Kingdom.”
In this regard, the Polisario Front stressed the necessity of implementing the resolution 1514 of the UN General Assembly on decolonization, by enabling the Sahrawi people to express their right to self-determination and independence.
“Sixty years after the adoption of the resolution 1956 of 11 December 1963, Western Sahara is still waiting for its decolonization through which the General Assembly has approved the report of the special Committee in charge of studying the situation concerning the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Peoples and Countries, including Western Sahara,” lamented the Polisario Front.
The Polisario Front’s representative condemned the Moroccan hindrances to the efforts made by the United Nations and the African Union to reach a peaceful and lasting solution which enables the decolonization of Western Sahara.
