Las Palmas (Spain), 11 November 2021 (SPS) - The 45th European Conference of Support and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (EUCOCO) opened Friday afternoon at the Congress Palace of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria).
Speaking on this occasion, the Sahrawi Prime Minister, Bouchraya Hammoudi Bayoun said that the Sahrawis did not want to wage war but were forced to take up arms after Morocco breached the ceasefire, in force since 1991, following the armed assault committed against Sahrawi demonstrators in the buffer zone of Guerguerat, on November 13, 2020.
The choice of the place and date of the 45th EUCOCO Conference was not fortuitous, December 10 being Human Rights Day and the Canary Islands the closest European region to Western Sahara.
Algeria’s Ambassador to Spain, who also attends the 45th EUCOCO Conference, expressed the full solidarity of the Algerian people and Government with the Sahrawi people in their struggle for freedom.
He praised the Sahrawi people for their resilience, courage and values.
The Algerian people understood perfectly the meaning of colonization and injustice. "We understand injustice and we do not accept it," he said.
"We have been very patient with our Moroccan neighbor (and today) we say that the policy of lies must stop," he said referring to some allegations made by Morocco against Algeria.
He stressed that just causes always end up triumphing, assuring that the Sahrawi cause will also triumph.
In turn, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the People’s National Assembly (Lower House), Mohamed Hani expressed his support for the Sahrawi people and Algeria's unwavering commitment to its right to self-determination.
A dozen Algerian parliamentarians are participating in this two-day conference. (SPS)
