PRESS RELEASE
ON THE APPOINTMENT OF MR STAFFAN DE MISTURA AS PERSONAL ENVOY OF UN SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR WESTERN SAHARA

[Bir Lehlou, Sahrawi Republic, 6 October 2021]: The Frente POLISARIO has taken note of the appointment by the UN Secretary-General of Mr Staffan de Mistura as his new Personal Envoy for Western Sahara.
The Frente POLISARIO recalls that the appointment of the new Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara comes at a time after the UN peace process in Western Sahara witnessed, since 6 September 1991 to 13 November 2020, extremely dangerous developments because the occupying state of Morocco undermined the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), as established in Security Council resolution 690 (1991) and relevant resolutions, torpedoed the ceasefire, and declared war again on the Sahrawi people.
The 1991 ceasefire has also collapsed completely before the eyes of MINURSO because of the act of aggression carried out by the occupying state of Morocco on the Sahrawi Liberated Territory on 13 November 2020, which continues to date as the Security Council and the UN Secretariat remain deafeningly silent.
The Frente POLISARIO, who has demonstrated through concrete actions its genuine commitment to the peaceful and lasting solution to the decolonisation of Western Sahara, underscores that no genuine, credible, and viable peace process, which would serve the cause of peace, security, and stability in the region, will ever be possible as long as the occupying state of Morocco persists, with complete impunity, in its unlawful actions and attempts to forcibly impose a colonial fait accompli in the Occupied Western Sahara.
The Frente POLISARIO therefore affirms once again that the only way forward to achieve a peaceful, just, and enduring solution to the decolonisation of Western Sahara is to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise freely and democratically their inalienable and non-negotiable right to self-determination and independence in accordance with the precepts of international legality and relevant resolutions of the United Nations and the African Union.
In this regard, the Frente POLISARIO looks forward to engaging with the new Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara regarding how he plans to proceed in discharging his mission with a view to enabling the people of Western Sahara to exercise their legitimate and inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
