Geneva group organizes conference on Sahrawi self-determination

Geneva, June 23, 2021 (SPS) - The Geneva Group is organizing a high-level conference on Wednesday on the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and the root causes of the failure of the United Nations organization to implement its plan settlement of the Western Sahara conflict.

Under the theme "the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination", this conference will be an opportunity for the panelists to address the root causes of the failure of the United Nations to definitively resolve the Saharawi question so as to allow the Saharawis to dispose of themselves and to discuss the way forward in order to relaunch the process of negotiations, which has stopped since 2019.

Will take part in this conference, in particular the permanent representative of Timor-Leste to the UN and the international organizations in Geneva, Mr. Francisco Dionisio Fernandes, and the permanent representative of South Africa in Geneva, Mr. Mxolisi Nkosi.

The list of participants also included the lawyer, member of the UN Commission responsible for identification for the referendum in Western Sahara, Ms. Katlyn Tomas, the former head of political affairs at the United Nations, Carmen Johns and the former head of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso), Francesco Bastagli.

The representative of the Frente POLISARIO in Europe and to the European Union (EU), Oubi Bouchraya Bachir will also participate in this meeting.

Registered since 1966 on the list of non-self-governing territories, and therefore eligible for the application of UN General Assembly resolution 1514 on the declaration on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples, Western Sahara is the last colony in Africa, occupied since 1975 by Morocco, supported by France.
