John Bolton: Trump decision on Western Sahara is “a big mistake for the credibility of the USA”

Washington (USA) 14 January 2021 (SPS)- Former US National Security Advisor, Amb. John Bolton, considered in an online Press Conference with Foreign Press Association Last Tuesday, that Trump’s decision to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara was “a big mistake for the credibility of the USA.”

“I think that the decision on Moroccan sovereignty was given with no thought at all and was a big mistake. A big mistake for the credibility of the USA!” he said.

Asked about the possible position the coming administration can take, he estimated that “this is one clear example for Biden administration to say, well we reverse what Trump administration have said,” he further considered that “they should not open a consulate in the territory of Western Sahara and derecognizes Moroccan sovereignty.”

Analyzing the reasons behind Trump’s move, Bolton said that, the fact that “this administration engaged in to recognize, incorrectly obviously, Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara was the result of a bench of delinquents giving away something that is not theirs to give away,” he slammed.

Western Sahara, he added “happens to be something I worked on since George Bush administration when we created MINURSO, the UN peacekeeping mission which was designed to have a referendum on the status of Western Sahara,” only to add that “when we make a commitment we should stick to it.”

John Bolton didn’t hide his criticism to the UN way of dealing with the question, saying that “frankly they should reverse years of conversations in the UN about autonomy for Western Sahara and hold the Referendum that we said in 1991. How hard is this to figure out?” he exclaimed.

He concluded that he “would end MINURSO frankly, if there is not going to be a referendum, that’s the reason why we instituted it for.”

The interview that runs for around an hour also tackled various issues that Trump administration did lately only to leave a complicated situation inside the US and abroad for the coming administration to be busy with for a while. (SPS)
