Lisbon (Portugal), Dec 17, 2020 (SPS) - The candidate for the presidency of Portugal and former member of the European Parliament for the Socialist Party, Mrs. Ana Gomes, criticized “the silence of the Portuguese government towards the proclamation made by the outgoing President of the United States, Donald Trump, to recognize Morocco's alleged sovereignty over Western Sahara in exchange for normalizing its relations with Israel”
In an interview with the independent television channel TVI I24, Ms. Gomes criticized the silence of her country government regarding what she considered “a humiliating act and a disregard for international legality sponsored by Trump, to the detriment of the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination ”.
In this sense, the former presidential candidate said that "Portugal has always defended Timor Leste's right to self-determination and expressed her astonishment because it looks the other way when it comes to Western Sahara." SPS
