British NGO Says Trump Proclamation Contradicts International Legality

Submitted on

London (United Kingdom), Dec 16, 2020 (SPS) - The British organization Western Sahara Campaign stated that “the proclamation of the outgoing President of the United States, Donald Trump, which supposedly grants the sovereignty of Western Sahara to Morocco, was a regrettable decision that contradicts international legality and negatively affects the international credibility of his country ”.
According to this non-governmental organization, “Trump's decision will not change international legality, which considers Western Sahara as“ non-autonomous territory ”, whose original inhabitants have the right to decide their own destiny, according to the Opinion of the International Court of Justice and United Nations resolutions ”.
In this regard, the British NGO stressed that this measure “will only increase tensions and lack of stability in the Sahel and Sahara region, mainly after the Moroccan military incursion into the El Guerguerat buffer zone, on the Sahara border, which led to the resumption of military operations between the Frente POLISARIO and the Kingdom of Morocco ”. "We are confident that the new Administration will immediately cancel Trump's proclamation and act as an honest mediator in the Western Sahara conflict for the holding of a self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people," concluded the NGO.
