CNASPS disappointed at lack of will by Security Council

Algiers, 2 November 2020 (SPS) - The members of the Algerian National Committee for Solidarity with the Saharawi People (CNASPS) noted, with a "deep disappointment, the lack of will on the part of the UN Security Council" to find, in a concrete and urgent way, a just, equitable solution, in line with the international law, to Western Sahara conflict, and to quickly activate the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in terms of the organization of a referendum on self-determination, the committee said Monday in a statement.
"The members of the Algerian National Committee for Solidarity with the Saharawi People have read the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2548 of 30 October 2020," according to the statement which stresses that the members have noted with a "deep disappointment the Security Council’s unwillingness to seek, in a concrete and urgent manner, a fair and equitable solution to the conflict in Western Sahara, in line with the international law."
The statement called the UN Security Council "to quickly activate, on the ground, the MINURSO mission on the organization of a referendum on self-determination for the benefit of the Saharawi people, as clearly specified by the UN doctrine on decolonization for non-autonomous countries like Western Sahara."
"This umpteenth evasion by the United Nations Security Council regarding its responsibility to the Saharawi people, and its official commitments under the September 1991 Ceasefire Agreement and the February 1992 Peace Plan, strongly contravenes the legitimate, as well as historically and legally based, demands of the Polisario Front," the CNASPS said.
"Moreover, Resolution 2548 refers to Morocco as a party to the conflict in Western Sahara with a respectable occupying status, despite the fact that it perpetrates repeated human rights violations in the occupied Western Sahara Territories," it stressed.
It added citing Morocco's "uninterrupted dispossession of Saharawi natural resources and all verified, repetitive obstructions to the mission of MINURSO and to that of the UN Secretary General's Personnel Envoy, and the flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement at the breach illegally opened by Morocco in Guerguerat."
